Neighborhood Guide

Point Loma: Housing, Nearby Bases & Commutes

Point Loma anchors the peninsula between the bay and the ocean — the shortest commute for Naval Base Point Loma, Sector San Diego, and a strong option for NASNI-bound families who don’t want Coronado’s price tag.

The Neighborhood

Peninsula living with the shortest commute to three commands.

Point Loma occupies the peninsula west of downtown San Diego, home to Naval Base Point Loma’s submarine and undersea warfare commands and directly adjacent to USCG Sector San Diego. It’s also a strong alternative for NASNI families who want a shorter bridge crossing than South Bay without Coronado’s premium.

Sunset Cliffs / La Playa

The peninsula’s western and bayside edges — ocean views, historic homes, the highest price point in Point Loma.

Loma Portal / Wooded Area

More inland, family-friendly streets with a mix of mid-century and newer homes at a more moderate price point.

Commute reality: Rosecrans Street and Nimitz Boulevard carry most of Point Loma’s traffic and back up near the airport during peak hours — factor in extra time if your gate sits on the far side of that corridor.

Schools

District lines vary by address.

Point Loma falls within San Diego Unified School District, home to the Point Loma cluster of schools feeding into Point Loma High School’s magnet program. School assignment is by address and can change, so always verify the exact school zone for a specific home before you commit.

Free help for military families: your installation’s School Liaison Officer can walk you through enrollment, records transfers, and EFMP needs — check the base MFRC page for the current contact.

BAH & Buying With Your Benefit

Your allowance sets your budget.

Your housing allowance sets your budget, and a VA loan is usually the strongest way to use it in Point Loma: no down payment, no PMI, competitive rates. Run your numbers first, then we match them to the right home for your commute and your family.
