NBSD sits on the bay in Barrio Logan, wedged between I-5 and the water, right under the Coronado Bridge. It’s the largest surface ship homeport on the West Coast — dozens of ships and well over a hundred commands — with the main gate at 32nd Street and additional gates at 8th Street in National City and Pier 13. Because it sits dead center in San Diego’s urban core, you have more neighborhood options here than at almost any other local command. That’s also what makes the choice harder: more directions to commute in, and more traffic funneling through one stretch of Harbor Drive to get there.
South — National City & Chula Vista
The most direct run for most ratings, with the most house for your BAH near the base. Avoids the reverse commute through downtown.
North — South Park, Golden Hill & North Park
Mid-city walkability and character homes, a short hop down I-5 or Cesar Chavez Parkway — but you’re commuting against downtown traffic at shift change.
